    I was struck by Paul's game of parodying the colonial cliches with Mrs. Boothby, ending with "And, of course, there's centuries of evolution between us, they're nothing but baboons really," (p. 100, Bantam). I thought this was a wonderful way of displaying the blindness of youthful arrogance and condescension.

    And, then, Maryrose's truthful and forthright response, "I don't see the point of that, Paul. It's just making fools of people." And, then, "I was like that too until people like you explained I was wrong. You won't change her by making fun of her. You just hurt her feelings."

    I like that.
