    Molly is a chameleon and Anna is a rock even though the seem to serve the same purpose for their circle of friends.

    I wonder what good it would do to make comments four years after the discussion of the book took place, but here goes. Being so called free, specifically Molly being able to change appearance, be a chameleon and then get self effacing about it as if she should be ashamed of the ability. And Anna not free enough to stand up to Molly often enough. Nearly all the friendships with women I had and still have are a bit like theirs ... occasionally having to stand up to a domineering person or having to make myself smaller to someone that perceives herself as less than me. I actually never thought of it until now. The different roles we play.
