One of Margaret Atwood's novels (Surfacing? Lady Oracle? sorry) deals with a woman who works for a tampax company (or similar) and has to answer the letters women write to 'the Doctor' -- it's very similar to this because the women have real, anguishing problems but 'the Doctor' must give pat, be-a-good-girl answers. 'Look pretty and shut up.'
