The women's fashion magazine: Plath's the Bell Jar was a fictionalized version of Plath's time as a college-girl editor of an American fashion magazine, so lots of the drama of that book is also about the conflict between appearance/form as dictated by the fashion industry, and the inner pain of one's emotional reality. Lessing was/is very good at foretelling the future. In the 50s there were very few women's magazines, but by the 1990s-2000 women's fashion & beauty media have a lot of space & authority in our culture. (right now there's a crisis and mags are folding, who knows how this will play out .)
